The services and facilities we offer:
GAB provides the following services and facilities to the 3200 registered blind or partially sighted people who live in the following areas:
Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent:
- Rehabilitation and mobility work: enabling independence for visually impaired people
- Social and sporting clubs: rambling, yoga, art etc.
- Comprehensive Resource Centre display of equipment and aids: talking watches, equipment for safe food preparation, leisure products, even gadgets to stop a walking stick falling
- Braille lessons, help with talking computers, training on the use of other high-tech equipment such as talking book machines
- Outings and activities such as group holidays to specialist hotels for the visually impaired, visits to local shopping centres, trips to garden centres etc.
- Awareness training for businesses, organisations, the care sector and local authorities: teaching others about eye conditions and how they can help people with poor sight
- Ring around: a weekly phone call for a friendly chat and help with problems
- Grants towards the cost of equipment
- Quarterly newsletter keeping people advised of activities, advancements in treatment and other information
- Transcription services into Braille, Large Print, Audio tape and computer disk
- Talking Book services and provision of radio/cassette/CD players on behalf of Wireless for the Blind
- Befriending schemes for socially isolated individuals. All our workers and volunteers are CRB checked regularly and are comprehensively trained in the work they undertake
- Work experience placements for people with a visual impairment
